“I was in Australia in a rental car. I was on the opposite side of the road, I was on the opposite side of the car and I was about to return the car and I heard my song on the radio. My reaction was, ‘Oh I better take this CD out before I return the car.’”
For his fifth studio album, Jason Mraz wanted to do things a little differently so he teamed up with his friends in the all-female folk-rock act, Raining Jane, and decided to go acoustic.
“['Rough Water'] features the one and only Jason Mraz. I’m stoked to finally get to work with him, I’ve been a fan of his forever,” Travie McCoy said.
“We talked about collaborating, he emailed me a song he was in the process of working on, I lent my two cents, all by email. Then a couple of months later, we found ourselves appearing on each other’s stages.”
Filmed in one take at the YouTube offices, Hayes enlisted the help of some YouTube artists who have covered his song for a mashup of his new single.
While “Rough Water” doesn’t quite embody the anthemic feel of “Billionaire,” it does have some “oh-oh-oh’s” and a few zeitgeist-y lines for the kids.
