Songwriter Jimmy Robbins and singer Keith Urban talk about the origins of “We Were Us,” the No. 1 duet between Urban and Miranda Lambert that has been nominated for Vocal Event of the Year at the ACM Awards.
“Never have I heard the song written from the point of view of a guy who’s in the back of a cop car with handcuffs on, watching a girl go completely redneck crazy at the cops,” he told Radio.com about his latest single ‘Cop Car.”
“It’s not the kind of song Miranda would normally do,” Urban told Radio.com, “but her voice is the first one I heard in my head.”
During our Country Jet Set Tour, we stopped in Louisiana to catch up with Dustin Lynch, who’s currently on Keith Urban’s Light the Fuse Tour. He talked about how he’s constantly tweaking his set based on venues and audience reactions.
“I heard ‘My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark’ and we had already written ‘Stars’ and so I just imagined that kind of energy in that song and what would happen,” he said.
“The 16 songs cover a lot of ground,” Urban says of his new album, and “there’s something about each track that is very much a part of who I am. Even if it’s a song I haven’t written, I make a connection and hope others do, too.”
“I just love Miranda’s voice. I love her artistry. We did some shows together many years ago. She got up and did a song with me each night and I loved our voices together,” he said.
“I’m surprised how happy I am with this album. This might be the very first album where it’s been finished and I’m completely ready for people to get to hear it.”
“I just got the feel of it. Everybody that had heard the song loved it. Sometimes it’s just as simple as that.”
Keith Urban is gearing up for a busy few months. His new album, Fuse, will be out on Sept. 10, and now he’s announced he’s extending his current Light The Fuse tour through January.
Keith Urban is officially returning as a judge on the next season of “American Idol.”
