How is the Yahoo! Music app different from any of the others available?

With 19 genres and over 300 professionally-programmed stations at your fingertips, you can fulfill every musical whimsy no matter where you are. Unique features include the ability to quickly favorite stations, "remember" your favorite songs, access your listening history - by station and song, share stations with friends via Facebook, Twitter or e-mail, skip songs you don't like, and buy songs you do like.
The Yahoo! Music app is everything you wanted from streaming radio. And more.
What kind of content can I listen to using this app?
Whether it’s Pop, Rock, Jazz, Classical, Oldies, Country, World, Latino, News, Talk, or Sports, Yahoo! Music Radio powered by radio.com guarantees you’ll be able to connect directly with all your favorite music, news, talk and information no matter where you are!
back to topWhat is the difference between "interactive" and "non-interactive" stations?
The Yahoo! Music app streams two distinct kinds of stations; interactive & non-interactive. Interactive stations include all of Yahoo!'s stations and a number of CBS RADIO online-only stations, like 40 + Reunion Radio stations including top songs from 1960 to the present. Non-interactive stations include all of CBS RADIO's over-the-air sports, news, talk and music stations, like WFAN, 1010 WINS, and KROQ. The main difference between interactive and non-interactive stations is the ability to skip songs. Every time you launch an interactive station, you will be listening to a unique music experience. No two streams are the same. With non-interactive stations, you will be listening to the same stream that is being broadcast over the air. If you're in Los Angeles, you can listen to a station in New York as if you were really there. It's like being in two places at once!
Take that, future.
Now Playing Display
All of the song controls for the Yahoo! Music app are contained within the Now Playing "Stage". Understanding & mastering these controls will grant you the power to maximize your listening experience.
Skip Counter
| Six Skips | ![]() |
| Five Skips | ![]() |
| No Skips | ![]() |
Though skipping is fun, it comes with great responsibility... DMCA law allows no more than six (6) skips every hour. In case you have trouble counting, we'll do it for you! On interactive stations only (sorry, non-interactive stations), the skip button displays with a small golden number next to it. Every time you skip a song, that number will decrease by one (1), until it reaches zero (0). When reaching 0, a message will appear reminding you that you have exceeded your skip allotment for the hour. As time forges forward, you may notice that the skip counter will begin counting up, back to 6.
Volume Adjustment
You can use the built in volume adjustment on the side of the iPhone or Touch, or use the touch interface to adjust the station's volume:

More - Buy, Remember & Share
While listening to any station, you can access several features by pressing the "more" button:

For the currently playing song, a "Find on iTunes" button will appear if it is available from the iTunes store, or you can "remember" the song. This is a great new feature that allows you to store songs that you like within the app, so if you hear a song you want to remember for later, you can! You also have the option to share the currently-playing station with your friends via Facebook, Twitter or by sending an email.

Background Streaming
The Yahoo! Music iPhone application takes full advantage of iOS4's ability to multi-task and stream audio while you play games, check e-mail or browse the web. After launching the Yahoo! Music application and starting your favorite station, press the home button to "minimize" the application and continue listening.
But that's not all. You can control the playback of the app without needing to re-open the application. Pressing the home button twice displays the system tray, and scrolling all the way to the left will display the audio controls:

Settings
The Settings menu allows you to change how some features behave:

The settings can be accessed by selecting the "Settings" button from your device's home screen. Scroll toward the bottom of the screen and look for the "Y! Music" icon and application name. This will open a screen containing three configurable options; Store Facebook Login, Store Twitter Login, & High quality.
If you share using Facebook or Twitter often, be sure the settings are switched to "On" - this is the default setting.
By default, high quality streaming is turned off to ensure consistent and quick access to your favorite stations. If you have good 3G coverage, or connect using WiFi, this setting should be turned on.
back to topThere are four main menus to help you navigate over 300 radio stations; Stations, Favorites, History, & Locals.

The "Favorites" tab is also where songs you want to "remember" are stored. The tab defaults to display favorited stations, but the top tabs provide the option to display stations or songs. From the songs menu, you can view the song information, and buy the song from iTunes if it is available for download!.

If, at any time, you'd like to clear your listening history, press the "Clear" button on the top left of the app's display, and you will be prompted to confirm your decision.

The Yahoo! Music application contains stations from New York to Los Angeles and everywhere in between. If you're from Detroit, but now live in San Francisco, you can take your favorite hometown radio station with you.
There is also a "Locate Me" button in the top left of this view to find available stations nearest you, using your device's GPS . So if you're in a new city, and want to quickly find great sports, news, talk or music stations, now you can.
back to topWhy is there advertising on my station? Can I deactivate advertising?
Advertising allows you to listen to the Yahoo! Music app for free. Every artist that you hear in the stations gets paid for their creative endeavors, so by listening to advertisements you're actually supporting the arts. Take pride in your contribution. And, no. You can't deactivate the ads.
How much advertising will I encounter?
The amount of advertising varies depending on which stations you are listening to. This can range from 4 minutes an hour on interactive streams, up to 10 or 12 minutes on some non-interactive stations.
There are also banner ads that rotate through the app. Clicking on these banners will never interrupt audio playback, and every expanded banner can easily be closed to return to your station.
back to topI received an error message. What does it mean?
While the Yahoo! Music App works well using 3G service, it works best with a WiFi signal. Understanding what the various messages mean will help if you are having connection issues.
"Loading" appears when the station is attempting to start. If this screen persists for a long duration, it means that there is a problem with service in your location.
"Buffering" indicates that the station has connected, and that audio will begin playing in a few moments.
Anytime you see the "Connection Error" screen, a connection was unable to be established.
![]() |
| Connection Error |
If you see this screen, and are sure of connectivity, simply press the "Try Again" button. If this does not resolve the issue, close the application and try again later.
Why can't I skip songs?
Skipping songs is only available when listening to interactive stations. If the skip icon is inactive, you are most likely listening to a non-interactive station.
Another possibility is that you have exceeded the allowable skip allotment, as determined by the DMCA, which is 6 per hour. The skip counter will display a "0" and an error message will display indicating that you have no skips remaining.
How can I improve audio quality?
If you would like to listen to high-quality streams, this feature must be turned "on" through your device's settings menu. Click here for more information.
