Panic! at the Disco Cover The Weeknd’s ‘Starboy’

By Amanda Wicks

Panic! at the Disco showed love for The Weeknd when they stopped by the BBC Radio Live Lounge today (November 21st) to perform. The show tends to have guests play one of their own singles followed by a cover, and that second component has led to some interesting interpretations.

The band tweeted that they “switched things up” when they appeared on the program. Instead of sticking to their wheelhouse, Panic! chose The Weeknd’s hit single “Starboy” for their cover performance, and added a slightly emo touch to the pop star’s collaboration with Daft Punk.

Brendon Urie’s emotive vocals contributed another dimension to The Weeknd’s hit, building into a desperate plea toward the end, while electric guitar takes the overall sound into something more pop/rock than pop/EDM. There’s even an extended jam at the end.
