Following the curtain call of the performance, the Tony nominee addressed the vice president-elect directly, to a chorus of boos. Dixon asked audience members to get out their phones to record the exchange, encouraging them to tweet and share the forthcoming message.

Dixon explained that the producers, the cast and the creative team decided it was important to make a statement following the show because they recognized that the show is an “inherently American story.”

He added, “We wanted to stand up and spread a message of love, of unity.”

On Saturday morning, Donald Trump condemned the cast on Twitter, accusing them of “harassing” Pence, and demanding an apology.

Regarding Trump’s accusation of “harassment,” Dixon commented, “Conversation is not harassment. I know people have said it’s a lecture, not a conversation. It was the beginning of a conversation.”

He also shared his belief that there was “Nothing to apologize for,” explaining, “Art is meant to bring people together.”

Dixon also expressed his appreciation to Mike Pence for listening to what the cast had to say, inviting him to come back and have a conversation anytime. The actor said president-elect Trump is welcome to come to the show.
