Alice in Chains Cover Rush’s ‘Tears’: Listen

By Amanda Wicks

Rush’s 40th anniversary reissue of 2112 won’t only feature a remastered version of that album; it will also include an entire disc of covers. And now, Alice in Chains have shared their contribution to stream ahead of the album’s release.

Alice in Chains covered the ballad “Tears,” putting their unique spin on it. For starters, William DuVall’s vocals take the song into darker territory than the original, which retained an element of hope thanks to Geddy Lee’s striking sound. A bright acoustic guitar still takes center stage, but the band integrates a heavier electric element as well.

This latest version of “Tears” is also notable because it marks Alice in Chains’ first studio recording in three years.

Besides Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins covered the instrumental “2112 Overture,” while Steven Wilson covered “The Twilight Zone” and Billy Talent covered “A Passage to Bangkok.” The 40th anniversary reissue will be available December 16th.
