Lin-Manuel Miranda Details Being Bullied in High School

Even Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton‘s creator and the modern day hip-hop wordsmith of the stage, faced bullies when he was in high school.

Miranda appeared on a new episode of Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast, where he discussed his time at Hunter College High School in New York. Miranda and other classmates butted heads with a student by the name of Felipe Andres Coronel aka the rapper and activist Immortal Technique. “He terrorized kids, he threw them in the garbage,” Miranda recounted. “I got thrown in the garbage by him.”

Besides battling it out (or avoiding his bully) in the halls, Miranda eventually faced Coronel in the school play. “He got a part senior year and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m in a f—ing play with the dude that scares the s— out of all my friends,'” Miranda explained. But he didn’t elaborate on whether they had ever called or a truce or if they’d become friends in recent years since Miranda rose to fame with Hamilton.

Sometimes a bully story is just that, but Miranda certainly proves the contemporary adage, “It gets better.”
