There’s something to be said about respecting those who came before you, but Lil Yachty has a different take.
Appearing on Pitchfork’s “Over/Under” series, the rapper and his buddy The Good Perry rated all kinds of things, including whether or not the Notorious B.I.G. was worth the hype. According to Lil Yachty, Biggie’s reputation doesn’t stand the test of time. He claimed the rapper was “overrated,” but refused to give any more specifics.
The Good Perry stepped in and differed from his friend, stammering over his answer and admitting that he’s at least heard Biggie’s music in movies. “I grew up very sheltered,” he said. But Lil Yachty didn’t change his tune. Instead, he pulled off his sunglasses, stared down the camera and repeated his answer, “Overrated.”
It’s not the first time Lil Yachty has admitted he’s not a fan (or not up to speed) on some of hip-hop’s biggest legends. In August, he told Billboard he couldn’t name five songs by either Biggie or Tupac, which caused more than a few rappers, like Kid Cudi, to get upset.
