The 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards were held in Rotterdam, Netherlands on Sunday (Nov. 6) and the big winners included Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Twenty One Pilots. Bieber won Best Canadian Act, Best Song for “Sorry,” and Biggest Fans and Lady Gaga was named Best Female and Best Look while Twenty One Pilots were awarded Best Live and Best Alternative.
While Bieber wasn’t in attendance at the awards show, he thanked his fans on Twitter for their continuous support. “Thank u for always being there,” he wrote.
The evening included 12 performances, some more memorable than others. Green Day, Bruno Mars and DNCE brought the energy to the stage for three of the most talked about sets of the night. Green Day closed the awards show with a high-intensity performance of one of their most recognized hits, “American Idiot,” and briefly commented about the election.
“It is nice to be out of America just for a second because of this horrendous election that is going on right now,” said lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, reported BBC.
Meanwhile, Bruno Mars brought his exceptional dance skills to the stage for his new single “24K Magic” while his band was dressed in uniform with what could have been a Tommy Hilfiger commercial. Earlier in the evening, DNCE proved just why they were named Best Push act with their energetic performance of “Body Work” and “Cake By the Ocean” led by Joe Jonas.
