Get Ready for a Virtual Reality ABBA

Gimme, gimme, gimme a digital time machine?

Since 1972, Swedish pop icons ABBA have so thoroughly permeated global culture that it’s hard to believe they were ever on the cutting edge. Now, thanks to entertainment entrepreneur Simon Fuller, the band is on board for a “virtual reality experience” that promises to be unlike anything music fans have seen before.

“I was imagining who would be my very first choice to work with on an extraordinary new virtual reality experience to capture the world’s imagination,” Fuller told Billboard. “In a second, I thought it simply has to be ABBA. I approached them directly and thankfully they all fell in love with the idea and now that idea is fast becoming a reality.”

Benny Andersson (the second “B” in “ABBA”), who spoke for the group, called the project a “time machine.”

“We’re inspired by the limitless possibilities of what the future holds and are loving being a part of creating something new and dramatic here—a time machine that captures the essence of who we were. And are,” he said.

Details on the technology are slim, but who would object to an injection of ABBA in today’s music landscape? The band’s final tour ended in 1980, so we’ve lived a full 35 years since the band was at the height of its stardom, though they made a brief and historic reunion in 2016. Virtual reality might be the next best thing to a proper return.
