Wyclef Jean puts himself in the shoes of Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders for an updated version of his 2008 single “If I Was President.”
For “If I Was President 2016,” Jean has some fun at the expense of the 2016 presidential candidates as well as one-time hopeful Sanders. Dressed up as each political figure, he imagines what life would be like as president if each one won.
“If I Was President 2016” revises the originally somber song to reflect more current events. Jean sings about Black Lives Matter, police brutality and more in between the updated chorus. “If I was president I’d get elected on Friday/ Assassinated on Saturday/ Buried on Sunday/ And on Monday everybody goes back to work/ It’s just an ordinary day,” he sings, adding in the bit about Monday.
Despite the song’s political message, the video has a cheeky tone about it. In one scene, two aids approach “President Trump” and sing his “calm down song” because he’s getting too worked up. Their lullaby fails to soothe him, though, and he responds by throwing a tantrum that causes him to lose his toupee.
“If I Was President 2016” will appear on Jean’s upcoming EP J’ouvert.
