Survivor Stories: Jessica Knudson

"You all said I was too young and this wouldn't happen so this isn't real, right?"

As part of our We Can Survive programming, will publish a series of “Survivor Stories,” where we talk to breast cancer survivors — or their family members — about their battle.

Jessica Knudson was 27 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She recalls how the Young Survival Coalition supported her and allowed her to support others in turn. She tells how music helped her zone out and focus on something other than cancer.

“I think at first I had no emotion,” Knudson recalls of learning of her diagnosis. Still three years shy of 30, she recalls telling doctors, “You all said I was too young and this wouldn’t happen so this isn’t real, right?”

Unfortunately for Knudson and millions of others, it is real. That’s why Young Survival Coalition exists; to create a network of voices, helping one another through the difficult task of navigating the disease and its treatment. “It’s really nice to be reminded that that are other people fighting along side me and there’s other people fighting the same battle or similar battles. I have people who can lift me up and who I can help lift up.”

Now in its fourth year, CBS RADIO brings together today’s biggest artists and their fans in raising awareness about breast cancer. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, for every ticket sold, $2 will benefit Young Survival Coalition. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and the second-most common cancer overall. For more information on We Can Survive, go to the show’s official website.
