Survivor Stories: Grace Cook

"You don't have family who have been diagnosed. You don't have friends who have been diagnosed. You're the youngest person in the oncology office."

As part of our We Can Survive programming, Radio.com will publish a series of “Survivor Stories,” where we talk to breast cancer survivors — or their family members — about their battle.

“As a young woman who’s been diagnosed [with breast cancer], you often feel like nobody understands,” Grace Cook says. Diagnosed at 31, she said that she didn’t know anyone else who was going through was she was.

“You don’t have family who have been diagnosed. You don’t have friends who have been diagnosed. You’re the youngest person in the oncology office.” Fortunately, she met the Young Survival Coalition, an support organization for young women diagnosed with breast cancer.

“When there’s an event [by Young Survival Coalition] that brings people together like that, you see that you’re not the only one, you’re not alone. And that is so important when you’re going through treatment, and beyond. If you have some people who really get that, who are walking alongside you, it makes all the difference.”

Now in its fourth year, CBS RADIO brings together today’s biggest artists and their fans in raising awareness about breast cancer. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, for every ticket sold, $2 will benefit Young Survival Coalition. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and the second-most common cancer overall. For more information on We Can Survive, go to the show’s official website.
