Metallica’s Kirk Hammett is the latest subject in guitar string maker Ernie Ball’s latest episode of String Theory. In the fifteen-minute film, Hammett explores his inspirations as a budding guitarist looking up to greats like Jimi Hendrix.

The short film cuts between Hammett’s storytelling and his guitar playing, where he performs riffs from Metallica’s most popular songs.

“If I’m bummed out, I’ll go to my guitar,” explains Hammett. “A lot of times when I’m really stressed out or I’m dealing with anxiety, I’ll just play until I calm down. When I have this feeling inside that needs to get out, the guitar helps that feeling. It’s a creative tool, but on the other hand, it’s also a rehabilitative, emotional, spiritual tool that I use to feed my inner self.”

Ernie Ball’s String Theory mini-docs include sit-downs with Joe Don Rooney of Rascal Flatts, Justin Chancellor of Tool, Courtney Barnett, Billy Idol’s longtime guitarist Steve Stevens and more.
