Survivor Stories: Avni Vora Gandhi

"When they were doing the routine breast exam -- which I usually rolled my eyes at -- they found a lump."

As part of our We Can Survive programming, will publish a series of “Survivor Stories,” where we talk to breast cancer survivors — or their family members — about their battle.

Avni Vora Gahdhi was thirty-one years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Like many other women (and men) she was less than enthusiastic about getting a routine checkup: “When they were doing the routine breast exam — which I usually rolled my eyes at — they found a lump.”

She was young, and had no family history of cancer, so she was understandably shocked. “I feel very lucky — not to have had cancer — but to have had a disease that impacts so many people that there’s such a large support network.”

Part of that large support network is the Young Survival Coalition, an organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. (Learn more about them here.)

She’s a big Beyonce fan, and went to see Queen Bey the week after her surgery. The song that hit her the hardest? The Destiny’s Child classic, “Survivor.”

Learn more about Avni in the Survivor Story video below.

Now in its fourth year, CBS RADIO brings together today’s biggest artists and their fans in raising awareness about breast cancer. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, for every ticket sold, $2 will benefit Young Survival Coalition. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and the second-most common cancer overall. For more information on We Can Survive, go to the show’s official website.
