Dutch DJ Martin Garrix performed his new single “In the Name of Love” featuring Bebe Rexha on the BBC 1 Live Lounge today (October 3), and for their second number the pair took the opportunity to cover Twenty One Pilots.
Playing the duo’s single “Heathens,” off Suicide Squad: The Album, Garrix showed off his instrumental ability by playing guitar while Rexha sang. As far as interpretations go, Garrix and crew didn’t change much about how they played Twenty One Pilots’ song. The main difference comes by way of Rexha’s voice, which contains a slightly raspy quality compared to how Tyler Joseph originally sings “Heathens.”
Speaking with Billboard on Friday (September 30), Garrix opened up about collaborating with Rexha in the first place. “I just love Bebe’s voice and she’s a great songwriter too,” he said. “So when we got the chance to sit down in the studio in LA, we both went all in and were able to share our creativity. I just feel lucky that we got to work together, and I’m pretty proud of the end result.” Garrix’s new album will be coming soon, but he hasn’t shared a release date just yet.
As for Twenty One Pilots, they will be this week’s musical guest on Saturday Night Live.
