Alter Bridge have released the new song “Poison in Your Veins,” which will be featured on the band’s upcoming album, The Last Hero.

The song features epic guitar playing from Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy and a sturdy bass line courtesy of Brian Marshall. Then Kennedy’s vocals about self-empowerment and self-belief kick in: “How long will you cower down until you come to see that courage is the higher ground that changes destiny?” he sings. “For only those you dare to win with no fear of no rewards, the time has come to rise again/ You were meant to be much more, somehow.”
“This song showcases the inner dialogue in one’s head; serving as a reminder to live life courageously, take chances, and ultimately believe in yourself,” Kennedy tells Loudwire. “It’s not a new theme for us, but definitely one that can never be overstated.”
In the chorus, Kennedy describes the “poison” from the song title as the fear and insecurity that holds people back.
“There’s a poison in your veins/ Oh it’s the beast you cannot tame/ The way you let your fear burn inside will chew you up and spit you out in time,” he sings before offering more words of encouragement. “Release the poison in your veins, right now/ C’mon get it out/ It’s not too late/ What you choose to see is falling short/ It’s time for you to rise and be much more.”
The Last Hero comes out October 7. The album includes the current single “Show Me a Leader,” as well as the previously released “My Champion.”
Alter Bridge will remain on tour in the U.S. through October 10, then the band will take a break before heading off to Europe to finish the year.
