Metallica debuted their new single “Hardwired” live in concert over the weekend and drummer Lars Ulrich promises a massive 2017 U.S. Tour is on the way to promote the band’s forthcoming album Hardwired…To Self Destruct. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the drummer says it’s time for “full-on touring in January.”

“We did 180 shows on the Death Magnetic Tour in two-week periods over three years,” Ulrich tells the magazine. “That’s what works for us. We’re going to start pretty much full-on touring in January and are looking to figure out what we’re doing in North America, but there will definitely be some pretty extensive touring in America.”

Rolling Stone reports that the band haven’t played an American arena tour since 2009 and Ulrich says next year will mark their big return to the U.S. arena setting.

“It’s time to come back and do some proper penetration of America,” he adds, saying that he hopes to play some of the new songs off their forthcoming November release. “We’re itching to play them. Right now, every day when we get into the Tuning Room we’re just playing the new songs. Then we’re like, ‘Wait, we gotta get out there and play ‘Master of Puppets.'”

Hardwired…To Self Destruct is due for release November 18th and Ulrich says the songs are “a little more physical” for the live setting.

“It’s gonna be a lot of fun to play this. Also, some of these songs are a little shorter than the ones on Death Magnetic. I think it’s gonna be a lot of fun to throw many of these songs in, but we’ll change the setlist every night like we always do,” he concedes.
