Blake Shelton has just released his ninth album, If I’m Honest. As Shelton recently said in an interview with Carson Daly on AMP Radio, he probably wouldn’t have been ready for a new album so soon after the last one… but he’s had a lot going on in his life. And so here we are. With the album out now, we thought we’d take you through some of the highlights. We’re skipping past “Came Here to Forget” and “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” as they have already been making their moves to the top of the charts. But aside from those… this is a record full of soon to be hits. Here are our top five other favorites.
“Straight Outta Cold Beer” And that’s something we’re betting hasn’t happened too often to the country super star. This party anthem is another perfect country-boy song that says some of the same things in brand new ways with music that’ll make you have to tap a boot. Yessir!
“Every Time I Hear That Song” … we want to listen to it again. This heartbreaker acknowledges that painful feeling of being right back where you were the first time you heard that special song, once what you had is gone. If you’ve ever had a break up, broken heart or love gone wrong you will connect with the story and melancholy in this beautiful, retrospective song.
“Every Goodbye” – Shelton finds all the good in goodbye in this killer track. How a song about two failed relationships could be such a feel good, vibey story song is … well, that’s country music, taking a story and finding the twist, the turn and redemption from the pain. It feels better and better the longer you listen. You can hear the hard-fought happiness in Shelton’s heart in this track.
“A Guy With A Girl” – It’s almost like he wrote it himself. Blake has said that this song describes how he feels when he’s with his girl, Gwen Stefani. He’s just a guy in the world, with a beautiful girl. Shelton’s willingness to be truthful and reflect so much of what he’s actually been going through in his music is going to make fans fall even more in love with the Oklahoma cowboy. And probably Gwen, too, if he keeps singing sweet things like, “ain’t she beautiful” for all the world to hear.
“Savior’s Shadow” – The most unlikely track on the album is a gospel song that will sneak up on you and open your heart wide open with the tenderness and surrender in the lyrics and simple melodies. Shelton opens up about his personal faith in a way that he never has before publicly. He has said that the song came from a dream that he couldn’t forget, and the result is an honest look through the window to his soul.
The album’s title says it all: Blake, as he is known to do, is letting it all hang out and welcoming fans into his journey. “If I’m Honest”… this is one amazing collection of stories and songs.
