Round Up: August 21: Kip Moore, Bon Jovi, Method Man Return with New Albums

by Jake Hirshland

It’s Friday! With new albums to bump, and new movies to catch at the theaters, there’s no shortage of quality distractions from your work week stresses.

From outlaw country to arena rock, there’s plenty of variety in this week’s music spread, offering new albums from Kip Moore and Jordin Sparks, as well as OG’s Method Man and Bon Jovi.

In film, you can enhance your nightmare fodder at Sinister 2, or watch stoners kicking ass against C.I.A. agents in American Ultra… both sound pretty appealing to us.

So, without further ado, here are the music and movies to check out for August 21st:

MUSIC:

Kip Moore – Wild Ones

As noted in an interview with Radio.com, Kip Moore didn’t have a problem following up his freshman release, as his constant songwriting saved him from the fabled sophomore slump. Now, the young country star puts his money where his mouth is with the release of Wild Ones, finding increased depth and specificity through a mix of classic rock influences and outlaw country style.

Bon Jovi – Burning Bridges

After the departure of his guitarist and songwriting partner Richie Sambora, rock and roll cowboy Bon Jovi returns with his 13th effort, Burning Bridges. While Jovi is calling this a “fan album,” seemingly moving to temper expectations before a bigger record next year, the ten track LP still offers some emotional ballads and chugging jams for old fans of the arena rocker.

Jordin Sparks – Right Here Right Now

Singer-songwriter of American Idol fame Jordin Sparks has released her third studio LP, Right Here Right Now. The record marks a shift in Sparks’ pop music style. Where before fans found her flaunting her pipes over lofty piano jams and classic R&B backing tracks, the new release leans toward the trendy trap-pop style, with minimalist beats, and even a 2Chainz feature.

Method Man – The Meth Lab

Rapper and Wu-Tang member Method Man emerges with his fifth studio album, The Meth Lab. The 44-year-old New Yorker has dipped his toes into a few industries outside of rap over his long career, taking the role of record producer, and even acting in acclaimed programs like HBO’s The Wire. However, tracks on this record like “2 Minutes of Your Time” and “The Purple Tape” prove that he still has chops in the art that got him started.

MOVIES

American Ultra

I think we’ve all pondered the age old question, “What would happen if a stoner gas station clerk was actually a CIA-trained killer?” Well, maybe we haven’t, but that hasn’t stopped Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, and director Nima Nourizadeh from attempting to give the answer. In American Ultra, Jesse Eisenberg’s character fights through his identity as a government sleeper agent from under a blanket of marijuana smoke, endeavoring to save the love of his life, and provide a few laughs and creative action sequences along the way.

Sinister 2

In the first of the Sinister series, Ethan Hawke, playing a true crime novelist, dissected the gruesome murder of a suburban family, only to find that a pagan god Bughuul was behind it and to end up in the deity’s merciless crosshairs. Now, the boogie man is back, and in keeping with a genre dependent on repetitive reboots, Sinister 2 promises much of the same problems, but in fairness, some pretty good scares, too.
