Maddie & Tae on the Virtues of Budget Shopping for Style Files

"Tae and I have this sunglasses rule where we do not spend over $5 on sunglasses."

By Courtney E. Smith

When we ask Maddie¬†Marlow and Taylor (Tae) Dye to introduce themselves and tell us a little bit about their style, the firs thing they tell us is is that they’re a pair of Bargain Bettys. Like full on coupon clipping, bargain bin busting hunters out for only the best of good deals. And they know how to get the look of the brands they love at a cost they can bear.

“I went to American Eagle the other day and found this awesome jumper that looked like Free People. I love Free People but some of the pieces are like [the price of] my car note so it’s just not gonna work out,” Maddie says. “But I found this awesome jumper, the price was like $50 and I was like ehhhhhhhh. I took it to the register and they were like, ‘yeah it’s in clearance!’ I took it to the register to see..sometimes you’ve just got to make sure.”

Their bargain style extends to a key item for two girls from Texas and Oklahoma: sunglasses.

“Tae and I have this sunglasses rule where we do not spend over $5 on sunglasses,” Maddie says with a grin. “It’s gone up to $10. When we got our No. 1 song we were like, ‘Okay we’ll start spending $10 on sunglasses.’ But I was so sad because in Hawaii we were on this boat looking at sea turtles and awesome stuff and both of us had our favorite sunglasses. Of course the ones that I spent $16 on, I brook the rule, they flew off into the ocean.”

“Some sea turtle is very fashionable right now,” Tae jokes.

Outside of their thriftiness, we do manage to get a secret out of the girls. Turns out, they’ve both been dying their hair. Tae tells us that her under color of brown is her natural shade, but she’s been a blonde since 6th grade so she hardly knows life as anything else. Meanwhile, Maddie has always been blonde but noticed her hair has been getting lighter lately so she’s been dying her top layers a bit darker, to bring out the light highlights.

“That’s so funny how that works. I’m brunette and I wanna be blonde and you’re blonde and you kinda want to go darker,” Tae exclaims.

“Yes! it just proves that everybody wants what they can’t have,” says Maddie.

Watch the two future country superstars in our Style Files episode above. Their latest album, Start Here, will be out on Aug. 28.
