Wobble-wobble beatmaker, serial collaborator, and Mad Decent label head Diplo is on the cover of Billboard this week. Naturally, there were all kinds of gems in his cover story, but the shiniest one has to be his recollection of working with Madonna.
As reported a while back, Diplo and Madonna teamed up on a song, possibly titled “B—h, I’m Madonna.” While that song in question doesn’t get mentioned in the story, Diplo did reveal that he’s working on four or five songs for Madonna’s next album with producer Ariel Rechtshaid, who’s become a favorite in the indie-crossover world, working with everyone from Charli XCX to Sky Ferreira and Vampire Weekend.
One of the songs Diplo made with Madonna was inspired by a drunk late night in the studio. “I think three are just like amazing, smashes,” Diplo said. “One is super weird. Late one night in the studio we got a little bit drunk and she improvised a little hook and we made a song out of it. I think it’s going to be a breakthrough if she can manage to get everything together and get it out properly.”
If you’re wondering what Madonna’s drink of choice is, the answer is “Rosé. It was nice. I don’t think she really drinks, either.”
As for how Diplo and Madonna first linked up? It started with an invitation to Madge’s Oscar party. Unable to attend, Diplo and Madge started texting and eventually he sent her some of his tunes to check out. “She wrote me back like a 20-page text, notes about all these songs,” Diplo said.
Madge was particularly interested in a hook Diplo wrote for MNEK, which eventually became her own song. “That song is on like version 20. It went from a piano ballad to a ‘Turn Down for What’-style song, which I didn’t like. Now it’s somewhere in the middle, which is a more pop record,” Diplo revealed.
There’s a lot of non-Madonna gold in the interview as well. It’s worth checking out over at Billboard.
