LL Cool J Teams Up With Raekwon & More for ‘I’m Nice’: Listen

By Ezra Marcus

Recent years haven’t been entirely kind to James Todd Smith, better known as LL Cool J.

Particularly, many of us would like to forget the firestorm ignited by “Accidental Racist,” his misguided attempt to forge cross-racial harmony with Brad Paisley.

Well, as they say, no better way forward than through: LL announced a new album this year, G.O.A.T. 2, and has released two tracks off it so far. “Hustler” came out a few weeks ago, featuring a few lively bars and an appealing turn from the “Gully God” Mavado on the chorus.

Now he’s dropped “I’m Nice,” with Ron Browz, Murda Mook and Raekwon.

LL doesn’t sound half bad, considering the circumstances: he’s guttural, angry, and manages to summon the at least the vague memory of “Mama Said Knock You Out,” which is more than anyone expected.

Kudos where they’re due for the line “Open up your chest like I’m looking for some treasure,” which is just this side of hilarious.

G.O.A.T. 2 is due out sometime this year, though no precise release date has been announced.
