“Princess of China” may not be Chris Martin of Coldplay‘s only collaboration with pop princess Rihanna.
But even an award-winning, chart topping songwriter like Martin isn’t a shoo-in. He said he didn’t know if we’d be hearing his work for her. Martin told Maxim he was rejected by Beyoncé’s A&R team back in 2010, pre his “Princess of China” success.
“She has so many amazing people writing for her. It’s like trying to win American Idol, getting a song on Rihanna’s album,” Martin said.
He said the exercise of writing for Rihanna was a “busman’s holiday” — meaning he was meant to be on a break from work and decided to spend that time in the studio writing songs.
“I don’t think she even asked, I just said, ‘Please can I try something?'” Martin said of going into the studio to write for the Barbadian singer. “…Sometimes there’s a break from Coldplay stuff and I love to go and work on other music. It gives you fresh angles and new ideas. Things like that.”
Martin revealed that Coldplay are already at work on their next project to follow Ghost Stories.
