Twista Is A ‘Dark Horse’ Contender for the Hip-Hop Throne: Stream His New Album

By Ezra Marcus

It’s the nature of dark horses to surprise.

Case in point: you thought Katy Perry had the phrase “dark horse” locked down in 2014. Now here comes Twista, a perennial hip-hop dark horse, haunches straining toward the finish with his latest full-length Dark Horse. He gives KP a run for the equine nomenclature throne with his trademark high-velocity bars, luxurious production, and a full slate of impressive guests.

A true elder statesmen, Twista garners contributions from the best of the Midwest: R. Kelly, Tech N9ne, Wiz Khalifa, and Chief Keef all feature.

“Want My Love” is a particular highlight: the sexy, low-slung beat and Twista’s triple-time come-ons sound like vintage early-2000s VH1. A slurry Auto-Tuned chorus from Chicago’s DJ Victoriouz keeps us firmly in the present.
