Iggy Azalea’s ‘Fancy’ Breaks Chart Record for Female Rappers
By Philip Cosores
But it does take a chart to quantify the massiveness, and it turns out there has never been a song quite like Azalea’s.
With her sixth straight week on top of the Billboard Hot 100, “Fancy” is now the longest-reigning No. 1 single by a female rapper. Ever.
The previous record holder? None other than Lil Kim for her role in the all-star cover of Patti LaBelle‘s “Lady Marmalade,” meaning the previous record holder wasn’t even the main artist on the song, instead sharing top billing with others (in this case Mya, Pink and Christina Aguilera).
“Fancy” is obviously a rap song, not a song with a rap verse, but regardless of whether the grouping makes sense, Azalea is now undisputed as the owner of the longest running female rap No. 1 of all time.
Hopefully her post-“Fancy” doesn’t fall into a similar storyline as Lil Kim’s, as “Marmalade” has wound up being the most successful song the rapper has ever recorded.
