The two allegedly secretly married in 1994 when Kelly was 27 and Aaliyah was only 15 years old. The couple later denied the union, but a marriage certificate eventually surfaced with Aaliyah’s age being falsely listed as 18. The technically illegal marriage was reportedly annulled by her parents.
“Aaliyah’s personal and professional relationship with R. Kelly will be explored with care in the film as we set out to depict her life with the utmost respect,” executive producer, Debra Martin Chase told The Post. “Above all else, it’s our hope to inspire an entirely new generation with her music and larger-than-life talent.”
The film, tentatively titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, is based off the book Aaliyah: More Than a Woman by Christopher Farley and will cover Aaliyah’s life from 10 years old to her 2001 death in a plane crash at 22.
No air date has been announced as of yet, but it has been confirmed that Zendaya Coleman will play the young R&B singer.
Lifetime is also currently working on a biopic of Whitney Houston, which will chronicle the late singer’s relationship with ex-husband Bobby Brown, from their first meeting to their tumultuous divorce. The TV movie is set to air in 2015.
