It’s been nearly a decade since Natalie Portman put a pair of headphones on Zach Braff’s head and told him The Shins’ “New Slang” would change his life. Now the band is attempting to do it again for Braff’s directorial follow-up to Garden State, Wish I Was Here.

The new track, “So Now What,” which premiered today (June 20) on NPR, hinges on James Mercer’s falsetto as he dreamily proclaims, “I had this crazy idea.”

According to an email Braff sent to NPR, the director/big Shins fan asked Mercer to think about writing something original for the movie “inspired by his first impression of seeing the film.”

“Not only did he say yes,” Braff wrote, “but what he came back with gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. He is a savant.”

Along with The Shins, the soundtrack (out July  15) for the Kickstarter-funded film features music from Bon Iver, Cat Power, Head and the Heart and Coldplay.

Watch the trailer for Wish I Was Here, which is set to debut in New York and Los Angeles on July 18 before opening in additional cities on July 25, below.
