Interview: Martin Garrix is Tired of ‘Animals’, Happy to Have Tiësto as Mentor
By Scott T. Sterling
In the world of EDM, producer/DJ Martin Garrix has risen to the top of the heap in record time, with the 18-year-old lighting up dance floors around the world as well as the American charts with his breakout hit, “Animals.”
“I have no idea,” Garrix laughed during a recent interview with Radio.com when asked what catapulted the song onto pop radio playlists and as high as No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. “I think it’s the melody. It gets stuck in your head. I’ve heard the track a million times, so I’m kind of tired of the melody. But I think that’s one of the reasons why the track is charting so well.”
Garrix also discussed what it’s like to have legendary DJ and fellow Dutchman Tiësto as a mentor helping him navigate the waters of his career.
“Everything,” the young producer said when inquired about the kinds of things Tiësto advises him on. “Daily life stuff, but also like, production wise, I send him tracks, he plays them out live and gives me honest [feedback]: ‘This track worked great, but you might change this, this and this, because it can even work better.’ If I play somewhere I haven’t played yet, he gives me advice on what tracks those people like. It’s not only about music, it’s also about normal stuff.”
Garrix’s packed tour itinerary finds him playing all over the globe this summer, including stops at such American festivals as Firefly (Dover, DE), Lollapalooza (Chicago) and HARD Summer (Los Angeles). Garrix is also one of the featured artists at this weekend’s Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas. See his complete itinerary here.
