Turns out 50 Cent isn’t alone in embracing our new bitcoin overlords.
Mastodon announced today (June 11) they will accept the cryptocurrency for their new album Once More ‘Round the Sun once it’s released later this month. The band is partnering with BitPay for the setup, making Mastodon the first major label band to offer their album through the service.
“We’re excited to work with fellow Atlanta-natives BitPay for our new album,” the band noted in a statement. “We want to give our fans as many options to buy our new album as possible and are happy that bitcoin can be one of those choices.”
“BitPay is honored to partner with Reprise Records’ artist Mastodon,” BitPay executive chairman Tony Gallippi added. “Having a major label artist embrace bitcoin is a definite sign of bitcoin’s growth and expansion into the world of music.”
Mastodon’s decision to accept bitcoin for Once More follows 50 Cent’s choice to do the same upon his album release last week. Animal Ambition is available via his Shopify account on his website, with one of the payment methods being the digital currency.
“Stay with times,” the rapper wrote in a recent Reddit Q&A. “Technology is what’s changing the business, gotta get with it. I take money no matter if its [sic] coins or dollars.”
The bitcoin news isn’t the only thing Mastodon has on tap today. The band premiered the video for “High Road,” the first single for the new album.
“High Road” takes much of the idea behind the movie Role Models and puts it to music video form, following a young chap who attempts to rise to the top in the competitive world of LARPing.
Once More ‘Round the Sun is out June 24.
