Brian Wilson is tapping into some powerful guest vocalists for his upcoming album. In an upcoming issue of Rolling Stone, it’s revealed that the legendary singer and songwriter will be joined by some of today’s best and brightest rising artists — including Lana Del Rey, Kacey Musgraves and possibly even Frank Ocean.
Wilson is working with Del Rey on a track called “Last Song,” and is joined by Musgraves for “Sharing A New Day.”
Additionally, Zooey Deschanel will croon along on what they call a “space-age bossa nova” track called “On the Island.”
And Frank Ocean is a maybe, but Wilson wants him on a song called “Special Love.”
“This project blows my mind,” Wilson tells the magazine. “I had no idea we could pull this off!”
None of the collaborations are confirmed as definitely seeing the light of day; currently, they’re merely songs in contention for the final track list.
The album was announced on June 6, when Capitol Music Group revealed that Wilson would return to the label and that he has been recording and producing at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Studios. Thus far, he has been joined by former Beach Boys Al Jardine and David Marks as well as session musicians Don Was and Jim Keltner.
“Brian Wilson is simply one of the most important figures in the history of popular music, and he continues to have a far-reaching and influential impact on our culture,” Capitol Music Group chairman and CEO Steve Barnett said in a statement. “His contributions to the legacy of Capitol Records are immeasurable, and I couldn’t be more thrilled that he is once again part of the Capitol family and that he is already employing his enormous musical powers to create new music. What a pleasure for me to say, ‘Welcome back, Brian’.”
No release date for the album has yet been revealed.
