Sam Smith has a big fan in Ed Sheeran.

Earlier today (June 5), Sheeran appeared on BBC Radio One’s Live Lounge, treating listeners to a cover of Smith’s song “Stay With Me,” off the fellow Brit’s upcoming debut, In the Lonely Hour, out June 17 in the U.S.

Before launching into the track, Sheeran shared a few kind words about not only the song, but also the singer behind it.

“It is my favorite song of the last year,” Sheeran said. “It’s an instant classic. It’s going to be around for a long time.”

He added: “And the artist in question will be around for a long time as well.”

For his rendition, Sheeran stayed true to the original, letting his voice — and in turn the lyrics — remain the focus.

Recently, Smith, who will kick off a North American tour this fall, teamed up with Mary J. Blige for a new duet version of the track.

Sheeran isn’t the only big named artist praising Smith’s talent. At a gig on London earlier this year, Sheeran’s buddy Taylor Swift called Smith her “absolute favorite” artist before the two performed a duet of his song “Money On My Mind.”

Sheeran’s new album, x, featuring his latest single, “Sing,” produced by Pharrell, will be out June 23. He added a performance of the single during the BBC set.

On June 13, Sheeran will play a special show at New York’s Ellis Island. The singer officially kicks off his North American arena tour Aug. 22 in Seattle.
