Welcome to Radio Feedback, Radio.com’s weekly feature where we ask artists to wax nostalgic on the first time they heard themselves on the radio.
The first time Naughty Boy (real name Shahid Khan) heard his song “La La La” on the radio, it was already at the top of the charts.
“I know that sounds crazy, but I spent so much time finishing my album that I hadn’t actually been in a car listening to the radio in a long time,” he told Radio.com.
Naughty Boy was with his friend in the car when he heard the radio DJ announce that the song was No. 1 and both were in disbelief.
“We just stopped the car and he looked at me in a really funny way. ‘You did this? You’re No. 1 right now?'” Naughty Boy recalled. “It brought me down to earth but also it was an amazing moment. It was nice to hear it for the first time in that context in that it’s the No. 1 record in the country. I still can’t actually believe it.”
He added: “All I really want is to be accepted for my ideas and my music. I don’t do many interviews or show my face much. I really want the music to do the talking.”
His first album, Hotel Cabana, is out now.
