One man in Chicago is fed up with the city’s high crime rates, racial disparity and political cover-ups. Ben Shepard, a self-identified “artist and writer” launched the website Kanye 4 Mayor to encourage the kind of change he feels Chicago needs, done Kanye West style.
In an open letter on the site, Shepard invites West to run for mayor, saying, “Doing this would require fixing some big problems. There are four main ones: the schools are awful, the public transportation system is subpar, it isn’t a democracy, there are too many shootings.”
He goes on to outline what he feels West could do to resolve these issues, including modeling our education system after Finland’s, which he feels has a similar ethnographic make up to Chicago; creating a low-cost, cooperatively-run system of public transportation; decriminalizing drugs to help stop Chicago violence; and turning “control over police, licensing and local judicial matters to neighborhood councils.”
Shepard outlines that West is his choice because West is a citizen of Chicago and “because the arguments would be realer, more interesting, and more political than they are now.”
He goes on to outline several general changes in the political and legal landscape that he feels Chicago should address, unrelated to the election of West. His arguments include, and are not limited to, increasing the minimum wage to $15 and hour, declaring Chicago an asylum city and allowing garden allotments for all Chicagoans.
Shepard writes that he is, “FINE being the only human being who endorses this because insofar as (1) he lives in Chicago some of the time, (2) there has to be a mayor of said entity, (3) better it be Kanye West than Rahm Emmanuel.”
For his part, West largely resides in Los Angeles currently, along with his new wife Kim Kardashian. The duo were joined in a highly anticipated wedding in Italy over the weekend. West released the first photos of the wedding on his Twitter account today (May 27).
West also revealed a new song over the weekend, with “God Level” hitting the Internet.
