Wearing the exact same leather jacket, KISS t-shirt and navy blue baseball hat (backwards, of course), Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer, Chad Smith proved once and for all last night (May 22) on The Tonight Show that they are not in fact the same guy.
But, what they were really there to do they was off their skills in a very traditional drum-off that would lead to the crowning of the best drummer.
Turns out, Will Ferrell isn’t that bad at drumming (Step Brothers must have really paid off), but he’s much better at smack talking. After one particularly good solo, he shouted, “I just blew my own mind” and asked Smith if he played for the “Lukewarm Chili Peppers.”
In the end, Ferrell realized he was fighting an uphill battle and grabbed the instrument he knows best. Nope, not the jazz flute, the cowbell.
Soon, the rest of the Chili Peppers–Flea, Anthony Kiedis and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer–were out there singing Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear The Reaper.”
Ferrell’s bold move led to his winning the trophy, but more importantly the night raised a little money for Cancer for College, a charity that provides college scholarships for cancer survivors, and Little Kids Rock. The pair had previously raised more than $300,000 for the battle to occur.
