Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have announced their first new album since 2010′s MojoHypnotic Eye will be out July 29. The album is said to be a return to the straight ahead ’60s rock and roll of his first two albums, 1976′s self-titled debut and 1978′s You’re Gonna Get It. Earlier this year, Petty told Rolling Stone that he’d written a batch of songs that he’d put aside after deciding that they were a bit too close to the “blues bag” of Mojo.

When Radio.com asked longtime Heartbreaker keyboardist Benmont Tench for his take on the album, he said, “I don’t really have a take on how it sounds. It sounds like the Heartbreakers to me. People associate [us] with different sounds that come from different periods, but it’s a very versatile  band. And if you catch us in a room when we’re just messing around, or if you hear the songs that sometimes don’t make it to records, they encompass a really broad spectrum. And it’s a broad spectrum of things that he’s written, and that he and [guitarist] Mike [Campbell] have co-written for this record.”

This is a big year for fans of the Heartbreakers: a few months ago, Tench released his solo debut, You Should Be So Lucky which featured a Petty cameo on bass. Later this year will the a deluxe reissue of Petty’s classic 1994 solo album Wildflowers (which Tench says is actually a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album; for more on that point, click the link above for our interview with him). Finally, the band has just announced a summer tour kicking off August 3 in San Diego (Steve Winwood will open the tour). Tickets go on sale on May 31, and every ticket will include a copy of the new album, according to the press release announcing the album and tour. But fans who pre-order the album on iTunes and Amazon beginning June 3 will get an instant download of the first of several album tracks to be revealed prior to the release date.
