The Black Keys Are the Greatest Mother’s Day Gift of All in ‘SNL’ Promos
By Kevin Rutherford
What does your mom want for Mother’s Day? According to Saturday Night Live, none other than the Black Keys. Makes sense, right?
In the new promos for SNL‘s penultimate episode of this season, host Charlize Theron, along with cast member Cecily Strong, dangles the carrot that is the Akron rock duo in viewers’ faces.
“It’s Mother’s Day, so give your mom what she wants most,” Strong opines. “The Black Keys!” Theron exclaims, prompting a quick wave and hello from guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney.
Probably the funniest aspect of the video is not the little jokes Theron and Strong dispense in the promos, but — as is at times customary with these — the rockers’ care level, which seems to be hovering somewhere just above Carney’s thoughts while listening to Justin Bieber. The awkwardness is akin to a good episode of The Office — painful, but you can’t look away.
The Black Keys’ appearance on the show — their third — helps promote Turn Blue, the band’s eighth studio album. Not only is lead single “Fever” continuing to climb the charts; they’re also streaming the new record in full on iTunes prior to its release next week.
Auerbach himself has more than just his own music on the line this spring. He’s also had a major hand in Lana Del Rey’s upcoming Ultraviolence.
