“Thug Cry” is not a love song.
Well, maybe it is, but this is not a music video love song.
For “Thug Cry,” the new song/video from Rick Ross and featuring Lil Wayne, director DRE Films gets serious, casting Avon Barksdale from The Wire (actor Wood Harris) as a lost man recently released from jail. In what is really a short film, he explores life after an event that 1 in 3 black men can expect to endure in their lifetime. What Harris acts his way through on the small screen is as real as it gets.
We get strong flashes of blue, Crip colors and bandanas that visually cue us to the gang activity he’ll explore to get himself back on his feet after exiting prison with no family to pick him up or home to return to. Someone pours one out for a homie who is already gone, a sad foretelling of our hero’s fate.
In between there’s get Ross and Wayne in stand up shots, done in saturated, sharp color with contrasting red elements to neutralize any pro-Crip message.
