On May 3, “Follow Your Arrow” singer and current ACM Album of the Year winner Kacey Musgraves will become the first country artist to perform at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York.

Musgraves will perform “Follow Your Arrow” during the 25th annual award ceremony, which takes place at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan. In addition, Star Trek‘s George Takei (an outspoken LGBT advocate) will be honored with the Vito Russo Award, and pop singer Kylie Minogue will also perform.

“America’s heartland is changing and support for equality continues to grow across party lines, in our faith institutions, and in country music,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “Kacey Musgraves is ushering in a new era in the country music industry, where supporting all loving families is now a core country value. It’s only fitting then that Kacey is to become the first country music artist to perform at the New York GLAAD Media Awards.”

“I think it’s definitely time for those issues to be accepted in country music,” Musgraves told Radio.com in a discussion about her song “Follow Your Arrow.” “Regardless of your political beliefs, everybody should be able to love who they want to love and live how they want to live. We’re all driven by the same emotions; we all want to be loved and want to feel the same things. So, hopefully people will put aside their personal, political agenda and just agree with that fact.”

Musgraves may take some heat for her appearance at the awards, but at the same time, she’s already seeing strong support.

GLAAD is the nation’s LGBT (lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender) media advocacy organization, and it was founded in 1985. According to GLAAD, the purpose of the annual awards is to recognize and honor media for fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives.
