New York’s Electric Zoo to Return with Stricter Safety Measures

By Brian Ives

After two drug-related deaths at New York’s EDM festival Electric Zoo caused the cancellation of the final day of the event last year, promoters have announced that it will return this summer, albeit with “tighter safety measures.”

Gothamist reports some of these measures will include the hiring of plainclothes security guards who specialize in narcotics, freely available water, free/cheap electrolyte beverages and drug sniffing dogs. Vendors will be more highly scrutinized, the event will be shorter and start later in the day (to reduce fans’ exposure to the sun) and there will be “amnesty bins,” where fans can ditch illegal substances before being searched without penalty (amnesty bins have been used at European festivals for years).

Also, the Wall Street Journal reports that festivalgoers will be required to watch an antidrug public-service announcement online, delivered by EDM artists, to activate the wristbands that get them into the event.

The festival’s official website says that Electric Zoo will return to Randall’s Island again for Labor Day weekend, Aug. 29-31. However, the WSJ reports that they haven’t yet received a site permit from the Department of Parks and Recreation to hold the festival, although that is something the promoters said typically happens later in the year.
