Watch Lee Brice’s Video for ‘Personal’ and ‘Honest’ New Single ‘I Don’t Dance’
By Kurt Wolff
When Lee Brice sat down to hash out an idea for a song he had called “I Don’t Dance,” he wasn’t expecting it would wind up on his next album — let alone be the album’s lead single. But as he told Radio.com during a recent conversation, something “magic” happened during that session that took “I Don’t Dance” from being “a song I was writing for my wife” (or, rather, wife-to-be — Brice and his fiancee Sarah Reevely were not yet married at the time) to a single that can speak to anyone and everyone.
“I Don’t Dance” is a love song from a man’s point of view, where the protagonist says that he’s not much of a dancer, but for the woman he loves, he’ll go ahead and dance anyway. “I don’t dance, but here I am,” Brice sings, “spinning you round and round in circles.”
Now Brice has released the video for the song, which blends footage of him performing (alone at the Ryman Auditorium) with scenes from his own wedding, which took place last spring. It’s a simple yet moving video that, like the song itself, is rooted in something deeply personal while also containing universal themes and emotions that touch just about anyone. Watch it below:
Brice wrote the song with “a couple of buddies,” Rob Hatch and Dallas Davidson. As he explained to Radio.com, they started messing around with a title he had called “I Don’t Dance.”
“In my mind it was a song for Sarah, before we got married,” Brice told Radio.com. “It was kind of about our first dance.”
But then, during that writing session, the song took on a new life of its own.
“Immediately when we finished writing it, I realized it wasn’t just a song I was writing for my wife,” Brice continued. “Maybe because it was coming from that place,” but whatever the cause “it turned out so special.”
That writing session, in fact, wound up being so “special” that, as Brice explained, the work tape that the three of them made to document the newly written song wound up being used on the final recording. “I just added stuff around it,” Brice said. “That was it, that was the original live guitar and vocal work tape that’s out on the radio now. It just had a magic to it.”
“It’s such a personal song,” Brice added, and the fact it’s now a single is “like my dream.” It’s “very honest and very real.”
“I Don’t Dance” will appear on Brice’s next album, which he told us is “getting there” and should be ready soon for a potential release later this year.
“I could finish it tomorrow if I have to,” he said of the album, which will follow his acclaimed 2012 release Hard 2 Love. “But I’m going to take every minute I can to make it better and better. Fine tune and fine tune. So in a couple months I’ll have it done.”
