Cody Simpson may have been eliminated last night on Dancing with the Stars, but the Australian singer isn’t bumming too hard; after all, he has a new music video out.
Monday night (April 14), the pop star revealed the clip for “Surfboard,” Simpson’s newest single. With a name like that, one might expect the breezy, sunny pop Simpson is usually accustomed to dispensing, but the song’s neither that nor a Beyonce reference — and the video reflects the new approach.
“Surfboard” starts with quickly strummed electric guitar before breaking into a comparatively slow hip-hop beat, acoustic guitar wafting gingerly in the background. There’s even a breakdown featuring more of an electro beat and catchy whistling.
Despite the departure from brighter pop for a more grown-up feel (though the whistles keep it rooted), the video’s contents are still fairly standard Simpson. The 17-year-old is getting down and dusty, creating his own surfboard from scratch. His skills attract a fine lady, portrayed by model/girlfriend Gigi Hadid, and together the duo goes out for a night on the beach. There’s plenty of water kicked around, as well as some choreographed dancing.
The Atlantic recording artist may have finally found his crossover hit that could make him more of a bona fide star in America. He’s still looking for his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.
The “Surfboard” single currently just that — a single. A new EP or LP from the Australian has not yet been announced. When it is, it’ll be his first since July’s Surfers Paradise.
