Life keeps getting better for Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney. As country duo Dan + Shay, they were nominated for their first-ever award as Vocal Duo of the Year at last Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards. Now their debut album Where It All Began, released last week, has debuted at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Country Albums chart.
According to Billboard, the pair has “done what no other twosome has done in the chart’s 50-year history: debut at the summit with a first album.” Where It All Began entered the chart with 29,000 copies sold according to Nielsen SoundScan and comes in at No. 6 on Billboard‘s 200 chart.
“Brooks & Dunn, part of their success was based on their writing,” Hendricks told Radio.com. “Though this music is completely different, these guys have that. They’re just writing machines. It’s just a magical thing to be a part of. I’m so lucky they asked me to be a part of it. Their talent is off the charts, both of them.”
Radio.com talked with Dan + Shay on the ACM red carpet on Sunday (April 6) about their whirlwind year.
“It’s a dream come true,” Smyers said. “It’s unbelievable. I check iTunes every 30 seconds to see. It’s been at No. 1 on iTunes the past couple days. It’s an incredible feeling.”
As far as their first ACM nomination, the band was still in disbelief, thinking it could be just an April Fools Day joke.
“We were freaking out,” Mooney said. “We were just watching to see some of our buddies. We saw Darius Rucker announce the Vocal Duo of the Year [nominations], and he announced our names. I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I called Dan and was like, ‘Dude we got nominated!'”
“I didn’t freak out about being nominated,” he added. “I was like, ‘Dude, Darius Rucker knows who we are.'”
