Katy Perry & Kacey Musgraves to Team Up for ‘CMT Crossroads’
By Shannon Carlin
The California Gurl is going country.
The show, set to air June 13 at 10 p.m. ET on CMT, will have the two trading off, with Perry performing tracks off Musgraves’ latest album, Same Trailer, Different Park and Musgraves taking a stab at songs from Perry’s catalogue, including her latest, Prism.
In a statement to Billboard, Perry made it clear that her and Musgraves might make different kinds of music, but they’re not that different from a songwriter’s point of view.
“From the moment I heard ‘Merry Go Round’ by Kacey Musgraves, I knew we were cut from the same songwriter’s cloth,” Perry wrote. “I have been a fan and a friend of hers from the beginning, always championing her prolific songs every opportunity I get. To me, Kacey Musgraves is an artist that should be a household name because she offers a unique perspective with her writing style.”
Musgraves agreed, writing, “In some ways we’re on opposite ends of the spectrum, but in a lot of ways our music makes total sense together. Her songs, while having grit, are so fun and it’ll be a cool challenge to throw a little country on ‘em. I love her brain and her heart and I can’t wait for our two musical worlds to collide!”
This is not the first time the two women have teamed up. Last October, Musgraves appeared with Perry for the We Can Survive Concert at the Hollywood Bowl, thrown by Radio.com and our L.A. station AMP Radio 97.1. The show, which also featured Ellie Goulding, Bonnie McKee, Tegan and Sara and Sara Bareilles, helped raise money for the Young Survival Coalition, an organization supporting young women battling breast cancer.
The two, who reportedly have been writing together, will team up once again for Perry’s upcoming headlining tour, which kicks off June 22 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Musgraves joins the bill starting August 10 in Grand Rapids, MI.
