Madonna Returns To Film, Directing New Movie ‘Ade: A Love Story’

By Courtney E. Smith

Her Instagram career has been floundering, so Madonna is going to get behind the lens of another kind of camera and take a third swing at directing a feature.

The Hollywood Reporter says the pop star is on board to direct Ade: A Love Story, based on the book by Rebecca Walker who is the daughter of literary royalty and The Color Purple author Alice Walker.

The story’s plot sounds like it’s in the wheelhouse of Madonna’s own experience, or at least relatable. Walker’s novel follows a female protagonist who falls in love with a Swahili man who lives off the coast of Kenya. Their romance, marked by different religious and cultural views, is more profoundly interrupted by a civil war. A screenwriter has not yet been brought on to the project, but Bruce Cohen (Silver Linings Playbook) has come on board to produce.

Madge previously helmed and co-wrote the period piece W.E., which explored the relationship between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne to be with her.
