Hear Metallica’s Epic Tribute to Ronnie James Dio

By Brian Ives

Many of heavy metal’s biggest names lined up to contribute to the Ronnie James Dio tribute album, including Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour, AnthraxHalestorm and Metallica.

The latter, however, couldn’t narrow it down to just one song, so their contribution is the “Ronnie Rising Medley.” The track is made up of four songs from Dio’s era as the frontman for Rainbow: “A Light In The Black,” “Tarot Woman,” “Stargazer” and “Kill The King.”

“A Light In The Black,” “Tarot Woman” and “Stargazer” are all from the band’s second album, 1976’s Rising. While “Kill The King” is from Rainbow’s 1978 album, Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll, which marked Dio’s last effort with the band. He would go on to replace Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath and later, form his own band, Dio.

Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone, choosing which songs to use in the medley was easy for the guys.

“[Dio’s] music is so much a part of what’s in Metallica’s DNA, the harder, edgier, blues-based hard rock from the Seventies,” he told the mag. “It was fairly effortless to put this together, because it’s something that we were all reared on.”

Ronnie James Dio: This Is Your Life, out April 1, will raise money for cancer research with proceeds from the record benefiting the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout cancer fund.
