Want to sing all the harmonies of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” with Billy Joel? Well, there’s an app for that.
Last night (March 20) on The Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon welcomed Joel to his couch and blew his mind with a new app called Loopy that allowed them to record every part of the classic children’s song with the press of a button.
With a little help from Fallon’s iPad, the looping app and The Roots, the two formed their own doo-wop group. And their wimoweh’s weren’t half bad either.
Joel even helped Fallon remember the words when he went blank. Of course, the Piano Man understands what it’s like to forget the lyrics to a song, even his own. He had a little trouble with “We Didn’t Start the Fire” recently at a stop at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. After the slip–up, Joel even told the audience “It’s one of the worst melodies I ever wrote!”
Indeed, Joel often seems bored with his own music, and has released very few new songs since his 1993 album The River Of Dreams. Last night, however, his joy at singing this standard in a new way was palpable. And fans have enjoyed the performance as well.
At press time, the clip had been viewed over 100,000 times on YouTube.
