Kendrick Lamar is quickly becoming rock’s rapper of choice.

After teaming up with Imagine Dragons for a remix of the Las Vegas band’s smash hit, “Radioactive,” Lamar has connected with Australian retro rockers Tame Impala for “Backwards,” a spacey new take on the group’s single, “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards.”

Recorded for the star-studded Divergent soundtrack, Lamar goes right in on the trippy track, laying some particularly gruff raps over the song’s swirling melodies and shuffling rhythm. Vocals from Tame Impala’s original version are only heard during the distinctive chorus. Listen to the new version below.

“Backwards” is the latest track to be showcased from the soundtrack, following previously highlighted songs from M83, A$AP Rocky and Pia Mia with Chance the Rapper and producer Clams Casino. The complete soundtrack album is scheduled for release on March 11, and is currently streaming in its entirety on Pitchfork.

Lamar was recently announced as one of the marquee acts heading to Austin, Texas, for the first SXSW edition of the iTune Music Festival alongside such heavyweights as Coldplay, Zedd, Soundgarden and his pals Imagine Dragons. The show is scheduled for March 12.

While Tame Impala have no U.S. dates on the books for 2014 yet, the band will be supporting Arctic Monkeys on a UK tour in May, and are set to play at English music fest T in the Park 2014 with Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, Ed Sheeran and more.
