Singing along to your own new songs while sipping beer on your tour bus with your buddies — and then posting the results online — isn’t the typical way for an artist of Dierks Bentley‘s stature to preview his latest release. But it works.

The videos, which Bentley posted yesterday on Instagram, came in conjunction with a more traditional announcement that offered more details about Bentley’s upcoming album Riser, including track names and a full list of songwriters. Bentley also revealed a couple of special guests on the album: Kacey Musgraves sings background vocals on the opening cut “Bourbon in Kentucky” (he actually premiered that song as far back as July, performing it live with Musgraves on the Grand Ole Opry); and Chris Stapleton lends his voice to the closing number, “Hurt Somebody.” See the full track list below.

As for the videos, each is only about 15 seconds long, but it’s just enough time to pique our interest and leave us curious to hear more. Even more importantly, we get to listen in a way that’s almost like being there in person on the bus with Bentley (you’ll have to bring your own beer, though).

You can watch all the videos on Bentley’s Instagram account, but we’ve featured a few below, which offer a small taste of the album’s various moods, melodies and subjects — from the easygoing anthem “Back Porch” to more intense songs such as “Here on Earth” and “Hurt Somebody.”

The first is a snippet from “Say You Do”:

“Here on Earth” is a soul-searching power anthem (“there’s not a stone in my heart I’ve left unturned”):

While “Drunk on a Plane” turns out to be more of a party song (“buying drinks for everybody but the pilot”) than the name might initially imply:

Another of the more intense clips is the album’s title track. When “darkness comes to town,” he sings, “I’m a lighter,” a “get out aliver” and a “survivor”:

During “Back Porch,” which has the rhythm and feel of a laid-back summer party song, he reaches (appropriately) for another beer from a built-in cooler right under the stereo:

For the slower tempo of the album’s closing track, “Hurt Somebody,” he sits back down, eyes closed, lost in another world:

“I named the album Riser because the lyrics in that song perfectly articulate who I want to be, who I try to be,” Bentley said in an earlier press statement about the album, which is due out Feb. 25. “There’s a lot of really intense material on this record, but there’s also a lighter side that is equally important in telling the story of the last two years of my life.”
