Madonna isn’t one to shy away from headline grabbing photos, but this time around she actually didn’t mean to cause a controversy.
On Saturday (January 4), the Material Girl posted a photo of her son, Rocco holding a bottle of gin on her Instagram with the caption, “The party has just begun! Bring it! 2014.” The only problem is, her son is just 13 years old.
Shortly after posting the photo, which features two of Rocco’s friends also holding bottles of alcohol, many criticized Madonna for glamorizing under-age drinking since the legal drinking age in the United States is 21. As E! points out, the photo was taken in the Swiss Alps, which has a drinking age of 16 years old.
In just 24 hours the photo generated over 22 thousand likes and 1,200 comments including angry posts like “Booze is not something to make jokes about. Period!” Others wagged their finger at Madonna’s decision to take the photo, with one person writing, “You gotta know what kind of signals it sends not only to her son, but also to kids around the world.”
Some did defend Madonna, with one fan writing, “Stop being hateful. You see and believe what you want to. Don’t jump to conclusions, and start judging right away. Who are we to say if she is a good or bad mother?”
Yesterday (Jan. 5), Madonna responded to her critics with a new photo on Instagram, this one doesn’t feature Rocco, but two of his friends posing for a selfie, sans liquor bottles.
In the caption Madonna simply wrote, “No one was drinking we were just having fun! Calm down and get a sense of humor! Don’t start the year off with judgement!”
